Wow. I had such a wonderful & fantastic ultra marathon of fun weekend.
My super awesome friend [since 1995!] Victoria came up from Chicago for the weekend, along with her dog Milo. It was so great to spend some quality time together!
To sum up a few things that happened this weekend:
- Cookout at the park
- Tap Room/Sidetrack/Ugly Mug
- Front porch hanging
- Dance party
- Hilarity
- Crazy fun
Libby + giant $2.95 beer at Sidetrack
Front porch party
My sexy husband, the happy patriot

Unfortunately, Wes & Milo were not fans of the popping & booming fireworks. We were on the porch & Wes wanted to go inside, but once he was inside he whined to be outside & when outside again he tried to climb inside through the window [& so on], all with his tail between his legs. Poor puppy.
Milo sought refuge by sitting directly on Victoria. Nice.
Today Victoria & I finally got the tattoos we’ve been talking about for awhile. It’s my second & I can’t say I don’t want a third. Maybe a super nerdy library related tattoo? Anyways, this one means a lot to me. Sometimes I just need a reminder.
This 4th was quite a contrast to last year. A year ago, we spent the holiday with fellow volunteers, a few Bulgarians & a surprising sense of patriotism. Living & working in a post-communist society where resignation & a sense of defeat was often prevalent, we were suddenly very thankful for the American can-do optimism.
A year later, I’m still thankful that I possess that optimism, I’m thankful for the realism I’ve added to it, I’m thankful for being alive & I’m thankful for the endless opportunities to explorelovebreathelive.
And, if I forget to be thankful, I can look at my arm, reflect, take heart & carry on.
