Hello world!
Today begins fall break – that means no class Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for me! Despite not having class for three days, I’m still plenty busy with lots of other things in life & school & work & what have you & such forth & so on & what not.
Yesterday we had a half cord of firewood delivered – it’s officially fall! Also, it’s was a stunningly beautiful day & Joel, Wes & myself went to Wasem Fruit Farm to pick apples and enjoy the day. Then, later in the day, we had friends over for a fire & ate apple/gorgonzola fritters & a apple crisp with ice cream!
After cleaning up the apartment, I went into town & worked on two group projects today.
For my contextual inquiry & project management class, our group is working with a client [ours is the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program], interviewing staff, analyzing the information flow and using the data we’ve collected to make recommendations. Today a group mate & myself interviewed the director of the organization.
Today I also began working on a group project for my introduction to archives & records management course. It’s my favorite class & this will definitely be my favorite group project. The discussion around “less process, more product” is very alive in the archival community. When an archive receives a collection, it can be a rather lengthy process to go through the collection, inventory it, do any preservation work, do contextual research & catalog it. Because of this lengthy process, many archives have a large backlog of unprocessed collections – “hidden” collections because they are not visible, or available, to the public. Therefore, by doing less processing, you can have more product, that is, more materials available for general use.
As fledgling archivist, we are looking at some of these unprocessed collections owned by the university. Our group of three is responsible for two collections. One is a personal collection of items related to Philippine history. The second collection, and the one we began to sort through today, are the bulletins of a German radio station.
