Just to be clear:
I’m not an album reviewer, just a listener. For some of these I have very little to say other than “I like it” & when I have more to say, it’s usually about the events & emotions surrounding the album than about the music itself.
That said:
Here is the first half of my list, albums 25 through 11.
25. The Fiery Furnaces – Gallowsbird’s Bark [2003]
The first time I heard this song was while working at a summer camp – I’d go to the game room to visit a fellow camp worker [my future husband!] It was entirely unlike anything I’d ever heard, but catchy & infectious & great.
24. Modest Mouse – The Moon and Antarctica [2000]
This album is weird & angsty & much better than their newer stuff. I used to listen to this & feel rebellious. I don’t so much feel that way now, but I still like it.
23. The Hold Steady – Almost Killed Me [2004]
It wasn’t until I saw the Hold Steady play at Intonation in 2005 that I understood the appeal of their music. Craig Finn is such a charismatic guy & he manages to be simultaneously badass, but not so intimidating that I wouldn’t like to meet up with him for a beer.
22. New Pornographers – Twin Cinema [2005]
I don’t have a ton to say about this, except it’s a solid, catchy album. They manage to master a variety of music types, with three different singers & makes one cohesive, great album.
21. Daft Punk – Discovery [2002]
One of the very [very] few things I will dance to. That’s saying a lot.
20. Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlantism [2003]
Let’s be honest, what 20-something doesn’t have this album on their list??
It’s soft, beautiful & makes me feel young again.
[Lala doesn't have this online, so no track, but I'd pick the title track]
19. Radiohead – Amnesiac [2001]
This is my favorite Radiohead album. No good reasons, it just is.
18. Microphones – Glow pt. 2 [2001]
My friend Dan invited me to this concert in 2004 – I was living with my parents for the summer & didn’t have much else do to, so I went. And I am SO glad. Phil Elverum is a talented, creative man.
17. The Decemberists – Picaresque [2005]
I am in to epic things & this album is definitely that. Theatrical, fun & a little random. Their closing set at Intonation in 2005 was one of the most fun performances I’ve been to.
16. Those Transatlantics – Knocked Out [2007]
My first time seeing Those Transatlantics was when they played a show with my husband’s band. Over the next few years we’ve become good friends with most of the members and have played numerous shows together. This album is one of my favorites to sing along to & I’ll dance my legs off at their shows [again, dancing!!].
Listen to The Other Cheek on their Myspace.
15. Wilco – Yankee Hotel Foxtrot [2002]
Such a solid, solid album.
14. Vampire Weekend [2008]
Alisha had me download this when lived overseas a & everytime I listen to it I have vivid memories of Bulgaria. It immediately transports me to autumn in Sofia, riding the tram to the Peace Corps office. Not sure if I’d like this album as much if it wasn’t for these emotional connections, but it’s still super catchy regardless.
13. Ted Leo – The Tyranny of Distance [2004]
I had “Shake the Sheets” down on this list, but when I was trying to choose a song, I realized all my favorites were on this album. So here it is!
12. Spoon – Kill the Moonlight [2002]
I love Spoon. A lot. The piano, the swagger, the rock. So good.
11. The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow [2003]
The first time I ever hung out with Joel, he gave me this album. It’s a lot like our relationship – it doesn’t get old, I love it more every year & it’s all-around awesome.

I did it! I posted half of my list. I honestly wrote this over the course of five days – I don’t know what to say about a lot of these, but they all mean a lot & I want to share them with anyone who is interested.
Soon: the top 10 & a download-able mix of all the tracks I’ve chosen.
What does your decade list look like??
