Scattered Saturday

I know, I know – I haven’t posted in forever.
Life is really good. So good, that I’m taking the time to live it, instead of write about it.

Here’s an assortment of random things:

Yesterday I made the most beautiful cookies of my life:
Best chocolate chip cookies

This song & the sunshine help me relax & keep moving forward:

I listen to this song so much [props to my boss for telling me about the album]:

I had a 3 hour tattoo appointment today – the half sleeve I started 17 months ago is officially finished. Frank, who’s done all of it, is leaving next month and I’m bummed to see him go, but I’m glad I was able to get him to wrap it all up. Pardon the language, but it looks bad ass.

I started reading Zeitoun by Dave Eggers this week. The only other Eggers I’ve read was A Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius about 3 years ago and really, really didn’t like it. However, McSweeny’s is great & I love 826, so I’m giving him another shot. Plus, we’re trying to get the main character of the book [it's a narrative nonfiction account of a Syrian American during Hurricane Katrina] to visit the museum. So far, it’s good.

That’s enough random for now. Our bellies are full of Indian food & a new disc of Six Feet Under arrived, so I’m off for cuddling & relaxing.

Groundhog Snow Day

Although SNOWPOCOLYPSE didn’t really turn out to be too terrible, it still gave both Joel & I a snowday [aka a restful break from reality] & it’s been near perfect.

We rolled out of bed at 9am, made a delicious pancake breakfast & drank our coffee while catching up on email & Google Reader.

Around noon we headed outside to do some shoveling. We only have one shovel, but we have a good system where one person shovels & the other rests & plays with Wes. Wes loooooves deep snow, anything he can bound through, really.

After the deck, side walk, front steps & driveway were clear, we headed inside to cups of chipotle hot chocolate [try adding chipotle to your favorite hot chocolate - it's amazing, I swear]. I got a lot of knitting done while we watched Groundhog Day for my first time ever!

Joel headed out for band practice shortly after & I began baking. Today I made mini mocha cupcakes with cream cheese frosting & spinach and feta stuffed bread bowls.

Now we’ve finished eating & are about to watch some Parks & Recreation.

As Joel remarked earlier, I wouldn’t mind reliving this day over & over.

Another direction

Hi everyone.
Hope your respective holidays/time off have been going well.

Things are pretty good here for us. A busy Christmas, a bit stressful like always, but wonderful nonetheless.

Just another week or so until the new semester & the new job. I’m thinking over the direction of this blog at the moment – I don’t think it’s appropriate to blog extensively about my work, nor do I really want to document the minutia of my life.

Until I figure it out, I suggest looking at Long Distance Baking – a food blog myself & some friends have started. [This was created mainly out of my desire to not let this blog be taken over by my foodie adventures.] We have some great recipes up already & there are definitely more to come!

Now go give someone you love a big, big hug.

Hibernation season

Now that daylight savings has ended, my body is officially kicking into what I affectionally call “hibernation mode.”

This includes:

  • Craving warm & comforting breads & cheeses
  • Bundling up in multiple layers & blankets
  • Reluctance to get off the couch
  • Wanting to sleep for 3 months
  • Gaining my “winter weight”
  • Feeling generally dull

[I thought this was normal for 23 years, then I realized it's probably legitimately SAD. Bummer.]

I think it’s very likely that the above have contributed to my cooking spree as of late.
Yesterday, after making those delicious breadsticks, I’ve made:

  • Spicy chocolate mousse: Super dark chocolate + fluffy egg whites + chipotle powder = YUM
  • Homemade caramel: Now I can have all the hot caramel cider I want, without paying $3 or eating chemical laden store bought caramel. Note on the recipe – next time I’ll mix in everything when the sugar is melted & not wait for it to boil. It has a tiny hint of overdone taste, but it’s only noticable when you eat it out of the jar, but not in cider
  • Pumpkin oatmeal – I made oatmeal with milk and the rest of the pumpkin butter I made a few weeks ago. Slightly sweet, pumpkiny, delicious, decadent breakfast. We sprinkled walnuts on top.
  • Another batch of breadsticks. The dough is rising now & I’m bringing it to a friends to eat after the boys are done with band pratice

Even if I’m about to spend the next 4 months bummed out, at least I’ll be eating delicious, homemade food!

A recipe for comfort

Things are pretty quiet around here – both Joel & I are pretty bummed out & a really stressed about what to do next. I’m prone to getting anxiety dreams when things aren’t going well & last night I dreamt that both Joel & his father died. If that’s not anxiety, I don’t know what is.

But just because things are a little rough right now doesn’t mean we still shouldn’t eat delicious food! In a moment of creativity & hunger, I decided to try making breadsticks today. The recipe is vaugely inspired by these soft garlic knots, but it’s mostly my own creation, based on ingredients we already had at home.

I present to you:
Saturday Afternoon Breadsticks!

Saturday morning breadsticks

I was surprisingly pleased with house these came out! I ran out of flour so the dough was definitely on the “too wet” side & so I wasn’t able to roll them out into thin breadsticks – hence the free form shape in the photos. BUT! They were cheesy & crunchy & a great addition to a bowl of soup!

If you’d like to give these a try, you can get the PDF here or click below for the recipe.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend!!
