Good things for a change

All of our hustle is starting to pay off.

  1. We’re still able to buy our house! The closing is set for Friday, so keep your fingers crossed everything goes smoothly until then.
  2. Today I was offered [& accepted] an internship with the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research [ICPSR] for next semester! It’s part of a series of digital preservation internships at U of M funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. I’m incredibly excited!
  3. Joel’s band has finished their EP & put it online. You can listen for free at their bandcamp site & download it for $1 if you’re really into it. Also, if you’re in the area, come to their show at Dreamland Theatre in Ypsi Friday night.

This note is dedicated to pretty much every person I saw today:

Ciao!

Today is a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Remember that post where lots of great & exciting things were happening?

All of those exciting things have fallen apart.
And there’s more bad stuff on top of that.
And I’m upset & stressed out beyond belief.

Simple summary:
We’re not buying the house
Now we qualify for food stamps

Although I suppose this does free us up so we can run away & live in the mountains alone [my secret life dream].

Ugh.

Anti-stress popcorn on a blustery & busy day

Today has been one of those awful days of non-stop running around & stress – added to the crazy wind we’ve been having & I’m feeling quite frazzled!!! [Who knew buying a house was so much work?? And that grad school takes up 97% of my life!?] I’ve still got quite of bit of work to do tonight, but I thought I’d make something yummy so it’s a bit more bearable. Inspired by Rachel’s post about making caramel corn, I went hunting for something similar & came up with peanut butter honey popcorn. YUM!!!

After deciding that was too easy & not enough distraction from my homework, I also made soft pretzels. Surprisingly fun & easy, they were also delicious! Especially when paired with a little mustard.

Our SAA group hosted two events today! The first was a discussion & show & tell for UNESCO’s World Day for Audiovisaul Heritage. We used a cool new common space in North Quad – we had 3 displays going with AV footage from the archives, a table of bagels, a table of AV formats [SO many of which I'd never seen/heard of] & an informal lunch discussion. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay for the dicussion session, but I heard it was really great & interesting.

This afternoon was the reception for students and area archivists at the Bentley Historical Library here at U of M. Also in attendence were 25 archivists from China who are here as part of the Joint Seminar on Archival Methods. Not only was it a great chance to mingle with area archivists [& potential employers!], we were treated to a performance by an ensemble from the Men’s Glee Club. Following that, the group from China sang two songs and there was a performance of tai-chi. Quite unexpected, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Anyways, it’s time to go to bed before another long day. I can’t believe the semester is half over already!

Disappointment & Pride

Today has been a bummer day – I didn’t get either of the funding sources I applied to, so it looks like I’ll be paying for my trip myself. I talked to the career advisor & she said that funding is very tight & extremely competitive this year & that she’ll let me know if she hears of anything, but it’s highly unlikely. I’m pretty disappointed. Oh well – I have my ticket, I’m going & it will be an amazing experience.

Last year sometime, Joel came back from walking Wes & said that someone had taken his picture. I didn’t think much of it until today when reading Mark Maynard’s update of The Ypsi Project. The project sounded interesting & I was intrigued if this had anything to do with Joel being photographed. After going through about 13 pages of really wonderful photographs of Ypsilanti and its citizens – there he [& Dan & Wes] was!

Erica [the lovely photographer behind the project], wants to have a gallery showing of about 100 of the portraits. I’m really excited about this opportunity [even though I’ll probably be out of the country for the show itself] & donated a little bit of money to help back the project. You can do the same [& even get some lovely gifts] on their Kickstarter page.

I really love this town & felt inspired to wear my Michigan necklace today. My grandmother got it for me as a Christmas gift this year from City Bird – a Detroit store that features Detroit-themed goods, as well as items from over 50 local designers and artists.

You may remember my 50 Books in 2010 project – one that I’ve fallen ridiculously behind in [the goal is pretty ambitious for a grad student], but I haven’t given up on it completely. Last week I finished reading The Little Book – an interesting time-traveling tale about family, love & Vienna. This weekend I picked up A Canticle for Leibowtiz & I’m over half finished. I also checked out some audiobooks to listen to while riding the bus & working. I’m starting with Gilead by Marilynn Robinson. My cousin-in-law Angie didn’t give it a great review, but I absolutely loved her first book Housekeeping, so I’m willing to give it a shot.

Here’s hoping the rest of the week is up hill from today. If the weather forecast is any indication, I think it will be!

Short & simple, nothing special

What a beautiful, sunny day!

I posted my first refection blog over on the ASB site. We’re required to do two blogs & this first one gives an overview on our project & some thoughts on service. You can read the blog & see a photo of me with my co-volunteer & project mentor right here.

Michigan Radio is having their spring pledge drive right now & you can download a Michigan Radio word search to complete & submit to be entered in a drawing. I did!!

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day! Last year it was beautiful & I wore a dress, spent almost the entire day outside & got sunburn. Unfortunately I work tomorrow, but there should be plenty of daylight & lots of friends to make it an equally great day.

But today,
I’m having a rough day…
At least my life is full of love & I have so many hugs to share.
