This weekend was a great balance of getting work done & spending time with friends.

Friday was a marathon of preparation for our GROCS display. Now that our team is only two people [yes, the other two dropped out during the semester], we each have a lot more to do. Although it was a long day of running around & hanging out at Kinkos, we were able to put everything up. I’m actually pretty pleased with out how looks, considering we did it all ourselves.

The gallery opens today at noon & will be open daily for the next two weeks, noon-6pm. This Friday from 4-6 is the gallery opening.

Today I installed this awesome Greasemonkey script that displays the zero inbox badge from Nerd Merit Badges on my Gmail screen [if my inbox is at zero!]. Cleaning out my inbox is a favorite complusive activity of mine & this is an added incentive!

Today is a weird day.
Tomorrow will be worse…

Tolling the bells & my aspirations for life

What a long week that was…

Yesterday morning, in addition to our coffee shop meeting, “the crew” [as the barista calls us], went to Frank’s for breakfast. It was a small diner, close to central campus but quiet. I love diners [the Wolverine is my favorite in Ypsi] & I’ll definitely be back.

At our GROCS meeting yesterday, we had the chance to go into the carillon on North Campus and play the bells. One of the groups is exploring how to create spaces with the bells & the music. Together as a group, we helped to play a piece of music. Each of us had a bell to toll – which bell and the number of times it was tolled was determined from information we got in the local obituaries. It was beautiful & felt sacred to be remembering someone’s life.

I put some photos & a video on Flickr.

I absolutely love these Nerd Merit Badges, especially the “zero inbox” & “homonyms” badges.

Today begins the ‘season of nonviolence,’ something I learned about from the church we attended before we moved. It begins each year on January 30th [the anniversary of Gandhi's assassination] & ends on April 4th [the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination].  This site has a daily practice for each of the 64 days of the season which will help to cultivate nonviolence.

This is a good time for me to reflect on the lives of these two men & to try to incorporate more peace into my life. Lately I’ve been disillusioned – with blogging, with school, with technology & with living my life at an ever faster pace. A lot of times I just want to leave it all behind, move to a simple cabin in the mountains & live a quiet life. But as luxurious as that sounds, I realize I can’t. My freshman year in college, while in New York City working in soup kitchens for spring break, I realized that the reason I had been given so much in my life was because I needed to give it back & work on behalf of those who don’t have as much. My life is dedicated to that simple realization. Most times I feel like I’m not doing enough, not helping enough, not changing enough; but, if I work hard enough, I hope that some day I will have affected change.

My duty moves along with my song:
I am I am not: that is my destiny.
I exist not if I do not attend to the pain
of those who suffer: they are my pains.
For I cannot be without existing for all,
for all who are silent and oppressed,
I come from the people and I sing for them:
my poetry is song and punishment.
I am told: you belong to darkness.
Perhaps, perhaps, but I walk toward the light.
I am the man of bread and fish
and you will not find me among books
but with women and men:
they have taught me the infinite.

Substitute sunlight & happy ramblings

I feel happy & relaxed. It’s nice.
A few months ago I signed up at Planet Fitness – I have unlimited tanning & access to a gym 24/7. For $20 a month, it’s a good deal. I chose the plan with the tanning thinking it might be something I’d want come winter. Well here we are, firm in Michigan’s wintry grasp & I’m feeling the urge to eat donuts, curl up under twenty blankets, turn off all the lights & sleep for three months. Unfortunately, that’s not possible.

So: in addition to my regular workouts, I’ve started tanning. I always feel guilty about it, knowing that I’m frying my skin & inviting all sorts of cancer, so I try to keep my trips infrequent & short – just enough time to get some precious rays. While I normally can’t trick myself into pretending I’m on a sun-soaked beach with waves & gulls, I’ve been using the ten minutes to practice meditation. The heat from the lamps, the whir of the fan, the chance to shut out everything & focus on myself – it’s a nice break from life.

Today, after a good workout & a relaxing tan, I came home happy, exhausted & relaxed. So relaxed, in fact, that I took a 45 minute nap – a rare thing for me. Now it’s finishing up my application for Alternative Spring Break, reading for class tomorrow night & finishing some codes [let me know if you need help calculating your overtime pay!].

I feel expansive & epic – I’m happy to be alive.

all is love

Things are slowly getting underway for our GROCS project. We have a Twitter account, a WordPress account, are in the process of finding wireless displays & contacting the local shelter about putting one up there. All these things are beta at the moment & won’t go live until around February 1st, but I’m getting excited. We have lots to work out still, but our rough ideas are exciting & hopefully anyone who comes across this blog will get involved too!

According to careerbuilder.com, archivists have one of the top 55 jobs with high growth projected for 2010!

Chile opened their Museum of Memory and Human Rights last week. It looks amazing & exactly like something I want to be involved in.

These posters are great:

I’m so wordy today. Rambling blogs & emails – a trademark of mine.
Time to finish watching Inglourious Basterds! [Those are Tarantino's misspellings, not mine, by the way]

New semester, new goals

This afternoon again finds me in my favorite spot – a chair in a library window, overlooking the diag. However, today, unlike the other afternoon, it’s sunny & everyone seems to have a spring in their step. Happily, I’m here late afternoon which means I’m taking a break at the same time as the harmonia-playing research scientist. Not only do I love to people watch as everyone walks beneath, but watching the reactions to Mr. Goss is wonderful. Some stare, some ignore him, a few pass by & then glace back & even fewer stop to talk.

Combined with the sun, it’s a lovely afternoon.

Yesterday was my first long day. Quite long. Yet, despite the fact that 9 hours of class on Mondays is a bit overwhelming, it’s nice that I only have class twice a week. The other days are freed up for work, meetings, appointments & homework, which is nice since it means I get to be on campus more often [something I enjoy].

This semester is going to be a very interesting one – most of my courses deal with topics that are outside of my range of experience & comfort:
– First thing yesterday morning I attended my computer programing course. In 14 weeks we’ll learn the Python programming language & learn to write/debug/execute various programs.
– Next was my ICT4D [Information & Communication Technologies for Development] class. I’m incredibly excited about this class, but also nervous because I have very little experience in economics or structural development. However, the readings have been exciting & the class had an interesting & engaging conversation.
– Last night was my Management of Libraries and Nonprofit Information Organizations class. Again, I know nothing about management/human resources/organizational leadership, so I’m sure to learn a lot. I’m especially looking forward to the emphasis on nonprofit organizations, since it’s very likely I will work in one [or a few] over the course of my lifetime & I’d like to offer as many skills as possible.
– On Thursdays I have my computer programming discussion section, as well as appraisal of archives. This course is taught by the same professor as my introduction to archives class & it promises to be informative, interesting & worthwhile.

These classes will be challenging, but I think they’ll teach me many new concepts, ideas & ways of thinking. I welcome the challenge.

This Friday is the SI Alternative Spring Break Recipe Book Pot Luck Event [quite the event name!]. To raise money, we’re selling cookbooks of recipes submitted from SI-related persons, then having a pot luck where everyone brings the dish [of the recipe they submitted]. People are welcome to come without submitting a recipe/bringing a dish, it just costs a bit more. I’m making some very simple cinnamon/sugar walnuts, but they’re so delicious I’m happy to have an excuse to make them.

I’m also making some good progress on my ’50 books in 2010′ project. Having this goal has made me much more intentional about setting aside time to read. Plus, the sooner I finish a book ,the sooner I can update the Twitter I’ve made to document my progress.

Now I’m off to met with my GROCS team. We’re going to finalize our project idea tonight, delegate some tasks & get started. This Friday we have our first all-GROCS meeting in the very cool Design Lab 1 on north campus.

Cheers!

Rejuvenating…

I’m able to breathe a bit easier now. My paper is turned in, I’ve finished two group projects & my next deadline isn’t until Monday. School related deadline, that is.

I’m still on track to send out my internship application on Friday, for the most part.

One item I’m having trouble with is getting a proof of insurance letter. A few months ago I for insurance & was accepted. Or at least, I think so. Every month they make a withdrawal from my account but they’ve not contacted me in any way. I called to request a card over a month ago, but I haven’t received anything. Today I waited on hold for thirty minutes, but had to go to a meeting before I actually talked to someone. All is need is a letter that says “Yes, she’s insured.”

Letter of intent – mostly done
Resume – done
Letters of recommendation – mostly done
Application – mostly done

I need to finish this all tomorrow. Then mail it off. Then wait. Hope. Cross my fingers & check the mail everyday….

We had an orientation for our GROCS team today. I’m really excited about this project & I think we’ll encounter a lot of interesting ideas/challenges along the way. Not only will we be working within our team, but meeting once a week with all the other teams, plus we have a lot of resources available to us. The challenging part will be trying to discover the needs/hesitations of two very different populations, overcome them & bring them together in meaningful, lasting ways. In about 13 weeks. A group of 4 students. Easy.

Now that it’s much colder & getting dark out so early, running around town isn’t as feasible, so I joined Planet Fitness & I’m so glad! While I appreciate burning calories & staying in shape, exercise does wonders for my mental health. Thanks to an hour on the elliptical today, all my anxiety is gone & I am so sleepy.

And to all these things I’m facing, that seem impossible, huge, unlikely, scary, yet so exciting:
