I like my school.
Made me laugh
Baking away the clouds
Have I mentioned how surprised I am that this semester has gotten SO busy, so fast?
Today I’m feeling incredibly distracted, with no attention span. My solution to writing this paper?? Baking bread! It’s the perfect mix of activity, rest, productivity & deliciousness. Over the weekend I made up a sourdough starter & I’m going to bake my first loaf today. I’m also baking up a loaf of this amazing looking cinnamon bread for a friend. He just bought a house & inherited some chickens, so we’re bartering bread for eggs. Anyone else want to trade for baked goods?
Tuesday the Society of American Archivists student group hosted a lunch for all current MSI/Phd students. About 40 people came & it was really great talk with other second years about their summers & current projects/classes, as well as get to know a lot of the first years. Also, we were able to sell a lot of apparel, which means we’re getting closer to designing & ordering more!
Here are some things I’ve found interesting lately…
- I’d love to visit this Museum for Rescued Letters in Berlin.
- This video imagining the future of the (e)book makes me a tiny bit excited about the possibility of owning one.
- The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Applied Engineering and Technology Library is completely paper free – apparently the first truly bookless library. Wow
- Sending a telegram is a unique, fun & more permanent way to communicate & it’s avaible through the services of TELEGRAMSTOP.
- My friend Matt got me Playing With Books as a gift for watching his cat last week [nickname "Death Cat"] – it’s a really great book & I’ve already got lots of projects earmarked for Christmas gifts!
I don’t have much else to say, so here’s a photo of the swiss cheese/eggplant sandwiches Joel made last night with my first ever loaf of sourdough bread & a shot of the ultra delicious cinnamon swirl bread.
Back in the game
My oh my. I began my “blogging hiatus” in the middle of July and now I find myself in the middle of September, surrounded by another semester.
Now here’s a post in which I use lots of lists.
Things I did this summer:
- Went to Florida
- Read the Harry Potter series
- Watched two amazing friends get married
- Played a lot of softball [& some kickball]
- Dancedancedanced
- Went to Chicago
- Watched friends’ [& husband's] bands play
- Read books! I’m reading number 38 right now – my 50booksin2010 goal is looking slightly more attainable!
I’ve also been baking quite a bit. Here’s a list of things I’ve made & I endorse each recipe as delicious:
- Coffee cookie sandwiches with mint filling [for Drew's birthday]
- Raspberry swirl cheesecake cupcakes
- Blueberry lemon muffins
- Blueberry lemon curd [MOST DELICIOUS STUFF IN THE WORLD!]
- Chocolate dessert cupcakes [slightly modified & translated from Bulgarian(!)]
- And quite a few loaves of bread
So far my classes are good. Here’s what I’m taking:
- Access Systems for Archives
- Digital Archives & Libraries
- The Community Information Corp seminar
- Grant Getting, Contracting & Fundraising [through the School of Social Work]
As a board member of the Society of American Archivists student group, we’ve been busily planning events, sending out emails & promoting these sorts of things:
- Awesome Archival Internship Presentations [this was last week & I talked about my summer in Cairo]
- A welcome lunch next Tuesday [40+ people will be there]
- We’re co-hosting the annual archivist reception with the Bentley Historical Library
- Selling our archives apparel
- And planning lots more wonderful events!!
Anyways, it looks like I’m back into blogging. Now that I’m in school I should have some slightly more interesting things to post, instead of drooling over how cute my dog is/how cuddly the cat is/how much I love coffee/how much I miss Egypt/etc.
I’ll leave you with this picture of some absolutely fantastic earrings I got in the mail today from the always awesome Victoria Pater. These are made from an old book cover by Overdue Industries. They’ve by far my new favorite earrings! [And the books in my ears match the ones on my arm.

!!!!
As of Thursday, I am done with school!
DOOOONE!!!
done!
Done!
DONE!
I can’t even explain how good it feels.
And, amazingly, it means that I have half done with my Masters. Crazy!
It was an awful week, but we went hot tubbing with some friends last night, which was exactly what I needed.
Now, after LOTS of sleep, I’m wide awake & updating my blog in bed BECAUSE ITS MY BIRTHDAY!
Today we’ve planned a BBQ, bowling & karaoke. 34 people have RSVPed to the Facebook event & I’m really excited to see everyone – especially since I leave for Egypt in 5 days!
I have a feeling that 25 will be a much better year than 24.
So much has happened lately, but it’s too much too write & I’m ready to drink coffee, so:
Goodbye for now!
Hard work & good news
Although this week is incredibly busy, today has been a good day.
First – our GROCS display is [finally] up & running!
Each day we’re asking a question & inviting those who are experiencing homelessness [or have] to answer. Later this week we’ll be setting up displays in a few places around town, helping their voice to be heard. The display just went up, so we haven’t gotten too many responses yet, but you can see the website & the answers so far. [Please don't answer the questions yourself, unless you're experiencing homelessness!]
Tomorrow the GROCS teams begin setting up our gallery displays. Artifacts from each project will be on display at the Digital Media Commons Gallery on North Campus – go check it out if you get a chance! Next Friday we’ll be having a gallery opening, which I’m looking forward to.

Other good news for today is that I found out I was elected to be on the student board for SI’s chapter of the Society of American Archivists! Four of us were elected out of eight and myself and good friend Purdom were lucky enough to be elected. I’m not sure who the other board members will be, but I’m excited for the opportunity to work together & plan some events!
Bad news – I wasn’t selected to attend TedxUofM. Disappointing, but no big deal.
Also – I just got an email that my internship has been approved for credit & I can officially apply & register for the 6 credits. Just three weeks to go! I’ve spent some free moments looking at pictures of Cairo online [including those from my previous trip there] & I get SO excited my stomach hurts.
Well, onto continuing to accomplish things, getting coffee & going to class.
